We didn’t think our handmade gift pattern collection would be complete without an offering from Anna Maria Horner. Check out her Thank You Notebook project from Handmade Beginnings.

It’s beautiful and elegant, and perfect for any woman on your gift list. Change up the fabric selection and it could easily function as a great technology organizer for any man on your list or turn into an on-the-go art caddy for a child. Click here for the pattern: Thank You Notebook.

As an extra thank you to our readers, we’re going to pair this free project with a giveaway – just because. Leave us a comment on this post and you’ll be entered to win a stack of Anna Maria fabrics. I’ll be selecting the winnner tomorrow, so leave a comment quickly!
And don’t forget about our yarn sampler giveaway posted back on November 15 – that giveaway is open until Monday!

With Thanksgiving almost upon us, that means…we’re already behind on our holiday crafting! Never fear: We’ve got a bunch of great projects to share with you that will make great gifts for everyone on your list, but won’t take you weeks to complete. First up is the Fair Isle Winter Headband from Sharon Turner’s Teach Yourself VISUALLY Knitting, 2nd Edition. This winter warmer would look great on a teenage girl. Click here for instructions: Fair Isle Winter Headband.

Teach Yourself VISUALLY Knitting contains a lot of other fun and giftable projects, too, from mittens to socks to bags. If you like knitting headbands, the Beaded Headband in this book might be just your thing–and the added sparkle of the beads makes it perfect for holiday giving.

You may have noticed that it has been mighty quiet recently on Wiley Craft. That’s because we’ve been working on something very special. To many, the upcoming season represents a whole lot of handmade paired with even more gift giving. It made us think – what can we give you, our readers? Well, as it turns out, the answer is “a whole lot!”
Today marks the beginning of what Pam and I kept thinking of as The 12 Days of Crafting. Trouble is, we just couldn’t narrow things down to 12! We have way too many patterns, and as compulsive crafters, we want to make it all and share the love. So, from now till the end of December, we’ll be rolling out somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 free patterns, with one or more giveaway each week.

Let’s get started! Today, I’d like to share one of our newest knitting books, Better Homes and Gardens Best of Knit It! Inside, you’ll find more than 100 patterns to knit and crochet, including a section on knitting or crocheting for charity. Over the next several weeks, our entire editorial group will be knitting baby items from the charity section and will donate them to the volunteer organization at a local hospital. Click the link Charity Knitting, to get the entire charity knitting section and share something handmade with someone who needs some cheer. Post a comment telling us what you’re working on, and on Monday, November 21, we’ll randomly select one winner to receive a gift box of selected yarns for charity knitting!
If you want to participate in charity knitting but don’t wish to source a local charity, you can join our editors. Just complete a baby item, send it to me, and I’ll include it with our group’s donation. All items donated to our hospital must be knit in a smoke-free and pet-free environment. We’ll be dropping things off by December 16th, so be sure it arrives before that date. Items can be sent to Roxane Cerda at Wiley Publishing, 10475 Crosspoint Blvd, Indianapolis, IN 46256. We’ll photograph everything before we drop it off and will post photos on the blog.

In the book, you’ll find a chart of the pattern, too, as well explanations of the abbreviations used in these instructions.

On Monday I shared with you how excited we are about the release of our two new VISUAL Stitch Encyclopedias. (Psst: There’s still time to enter the giveaway!) Today I’m offering up a sample of what you’ll find inside. Crochet Stitches VISUAL Encyclopedia, by Robyn Chachula, features more than 300 gorgeous stitch patterns. One of my favorites is the beautiful Blomma Motif, which makes a great fabric when turned on its side into diamonds. Here’s how to crochet it:

Ch 6, sl st to 1st ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 4 (counts as dc, ch-1 sp), [dc, ch 1] 15 times in ring, sl st to 3rd ch in t-ch, do not turn—16 dc.
Rnd 2: Sl st in ch-1 sp, ch 2, 2 dc-cl in same ch-1 sp, ch 3, *3 dc-cl in next ch-1 sp, ch 5, [3 dc-cl in next ch-1 sp, ch 3] 3 times; rep from * around to last 3 ch-1 sps, 3 dc-cl in next ch-1 sp, ch 5, 3 dc-cl in next ch-1 sp, ch 3, 3 dc-cl in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, hdc in top of 2 dc-cl, do not turn—16 dc-cl.
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc around post of hdc, *ch 5, sc in next ch-3 sp, [5 dc, ch 5, 5 dc] in next ch-5 sp, sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 5, sc in next ch-3 sp; rep from * around, sl st to 1st sc, fasten off—12 ch-sps.

Hey, knitters and crocheters! We just published two new books that we’re really excited about, and hope you will be, too. Knitting Stitches VISUAL Encyclopedia and Crochet Stitches VISUAL Encyclopedia are packed full of gorgeous stitch patterns to take your crafting to the next level. Use them to design your own projects or add some pop to an existing pattern. Authors Sharon Turner and Robyn Chachula poured their hearts and souls into these books, and all their hard work really shows.
Wanna check ‘em out? Leave a comment on this post, and we’ll randomly select one lucky winner to receive the book of your choice. The winner will be announced on Friday.

Would you like to be the first person to make a project from an upcoming Wiley Craft book? Do you enjoy being in-the-know on upcoming books and authors? Do you like getting free patterns and materials?
We are always on the lookout for crafters to test projects from upcoming books. To make our books the best they can be, we need home sewists, general crafters, knitters, crocheters, and more.
If you are proficient in your craft of choice and would like to become a member of our pattern tester pool, I’d like to hear from you. Leave a comment that says Contact Me, and I’ll send you a personal email to find out if you’d be a good fit.
To show some love for our pattern tester program, I’d like to offer up yet another giveaway this week! As you might imagine, my office tends to get a bit packed with craft supplies used in testing, photo shoots, and design. Leave a comment below before noon on September 26th and you’ll be entered into the giveaway. If you are entering the giveaway but are not interested in hearing about the pattern testing program, just note that in your comment.
